live in san jose with the security changes. anoushah. >> reporter: that's right. this is one of the biggest mosques in the south bay, and in less than an hour there's going to be a lot of people here for friday evening prayer. just a few minutes ago, we saw that san jose police officer's vehicle pull up. and they are here specifically because the islamic association wants more security in the wake of the new zealand massacre. there will be an armed police officer standing right there at the front door. now, here in san jose, there are also a number of surveillance cameras, both outside and inside this building. many muslims are attending friday prayer services today with their children, with their families. they are looking for words of comfort from their religious leaders, all while staying vigilant. >> we aren't naive to the fact that just because it's the bay area, just because we may be more tolerant than some of the locations in which attacks have occurred, that it couldn't happen here.

>> reporter: the south bay islamic association is sending donations from their prayer services today to the families of the victims in new zealand. now, meanwhile, both the san jose and san francisco police departments have stepped up security and patrols at local bay area mosques. coming up at 6:00, we'll tell you about the other new addition here at the mosque today meant to send a message of support to the muslim community. reporting live in san jose, anoushah rasta, nbc bay area news. >> we'll see you at 6:00. thank you, anoushah. social media taking a lot of heat in the wake of these horrific attacks. people around the world watched in horror as the gunman streamed the whole thing live on facebook. this is a freeze frame showing the accused shooter driving to one of the locations. the video was later taken down, but that hasn't stopped the gruesome video from being shared across other platforms including youtube and twitter. youtube said they are working vigilantly to remove any violent content. >> now to empty classrooms today across the globe, from san

francisco to switzerland, students marched to save the planet. you can see the protest right here. and here, looking at downtown san francisco from our nbc bay area sky ranger just a few hours ago, as people -- kids as young as toddlers, blocked traffic as they marched down busy streets. that's where we find nbc bay area's ross plater with the latest. ross? >> reporter: we heard from the students -- >> hey, hey, ho-ho -- >> reporter: hundreds of students from around the bay area converged on san francisco leaving their classrooms behind to wage their climate strike protest. and they hope this time people would finally pay attention. >> we got the mass public's attention by blocking off traffic. we marched. we spoke our voices. we went too big hot spots around san francisco. >> reporter: they were also trying to put added pressure on two prominent bay area lawmakers. so they made their way to the

offices of house speaker nancy pelosi then senator dianne feinstein to ask them again to support the green new deal. >> they have not made a commitment. they have -- it's very disheartening and sad to say that because they're representatives. i believe after seeing this today, i believe they're going to want to make that change. >> we are fighting. you are soldiers. >> reporter: the students then made their way to union square for a rally. organizers from the group yva, youth versus the apocalypse, told the crowd the clock is ticking and the need to do something is urgent. >> i want a chance to make something of my life. i want to have a family. i want to live, to have a career that i can be proud of. [ cheers and applause ] >> yes! yes! >> now is our time to fight for that right. >> reporter: now, we are told that organizers say they organized this most lyft via social media. they did some old-fashioned organizing with passing out fliers and texting and calling,

nbc bay area sam brock joins us live from the san francisco hall of justice with the crime and the recovery. sam. >> reporter: janelle, stunningly atrocious callousness, that is how prosecutors described what happened to poor rocky who is just a puppy that couldn't weigh more than a few pounds. now, we should note at this point these are just allegations. there is some video of rocky playing with animal care and control and getting much needed love and nourishment as she's on the mend. you'll notice rocky lost a leg and had to be amputated. ronald jones is accused of picking rocky up like a bowling ball, hurling her into an elevator so hard, she crumpled and dropping her into a nearby trash chute. four days later the custodian heard the animal crying and they saved the dog. now three weeks later, rocky has been adopted by rebecca fenson, the investigating officer. >> with all the tlc, excellent

care, love, veterinary care that she's received in the past few weeks, she has rebounded really well. her spirits are really high. >> the person had no respect for life. it was atrocious, it was cruel. and we're very fortunate that the dog survived. >> reporter: incredible that the dog lived through this. rocky suffered dehydration and a broken leg that led to the amputation, but she probably survived, janelle and garvin, living on garbage. amoeba while the man went during the arraignment. we learned he is a veteran and he told the judge he is suffering from ptsd. he pled not guilty. reporting live from the hall of justice, sam brock, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, sam. the fire is out, but questions remain. investigators are scouring debris looking for any clues as to what caused a huge fire in contra costa county yesterday. this is near antioch on bethel

island. flames destroyed three homes. investigators say it will take awhile to determine what caused this fire. >> at stanford university, the investigation into the college admissions scandal has widened. the school sailing coach john vandemoer pleaded guilty to accepting more than $270,000 in bribes to recruit two students neither of whom ended up attending stanford. vandemoer didn't keep the money, but diverted it to the sailing program. administrators say another half million dollars was donated and linked to a third student who is still enrolled. stanford tells nbc bay area it is still reviewing its records. and in another development to the so-called varsity blues scandal, canadian businessman david sadue pleaded not guilty today and posted a bond of $1.5 million. he is charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. the criminal complaint claims he paid $200,000 for someone to fly to vancouver to take placement test fozer his two sons.

sidoo who also works in san jose is a well known philanthropist in vancouver and has taken leave from his c.e.o. jobs at two canadian companies. his two sons attend cal and chatman university in orange county. >> for the first time since taking office, president trump issued his first veto today. he overruled the congress resolution to stop his emergency declaration on the border wall. this means the president can still go forward with rediverting funds to his wall. president trump insists he could have won over some of the 12 republicans who voted with democrats, but it wasn't necessary. >> i said, i want you to vote your heart, do what you want to do. i'm not putting any pressure. i'll let them know when there's pressure. i told them that when i need your vote, i'm going to let you know. i didn't need the vote because we all knew there was going to be a veto and they're not going to be able to override. >> they don't have the two-thirds majority to override the veto so the next challenge will come into courts where 25

states have filed lawsuits to block the emergency declaration. >> so we've gone from rain and even more rain. in a little bit, more rain to snow in the bay area, but finally a little heat. if you've been outside today, you know it is warming up. nbc bay area's meteorologist kari hall is tracking the warm up. c kari, it was spectacular. does the weekend look like today? >> it does, basically a photocopy like today. this is the warm est we've had since november. it is a welcome change. live look outside san jose as our temperatures topped out at 73 degrees today. right now we're at 67 and going into the evening it's going to cool off, back into the upper 50s by 8:00. and lower 50s as we go into closer to the midnight hour. as you make weekend plans, if you're going out to the saint patrick's day parade in san francisco tomorrow, we're going to have some great weather for that, too. a little cool to start as the parade gets underway, but will reach into the mid 60s going into the afternoon. we'll take a look at more 70s in the forecast and then some rain,

it comes back. i'll talk about that coming up in about 5:17. >> thanks so much, kari. after months of uncertainty, it looks like the oakland raiders will stay in town one more season. they agreed on a lease. the big winner, the couliseum. they filed an antitrust lawsuit over the team's move to las vegas. because of the squabble the team threatened to leave oakland and start looking for a temporary home somewhere else because their new stadium in vegas won't be ready until 20120. they agreed to stay and the rent doubled to $5.of million. >> this deal is doing what's best for the fans and the taxpayers. >> that's great. another season with the raiders. they just got antonio brown. >> if the raiders can't move into their vegas stadium next year, the team can play another year at the coliseum, but the rent jumps to $10.5 million.

find her birth mother...has come to a very bitter sweet a daughter's 35-year quest to find her birth mother has come to a very bitter sweet end. that search stopped when vacaville police cracked a decades old mystery involving an unidentified homicide victim. now, that woman's daughter has a new focus. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez is live in santa rosa where she spoke with the daughter of cynthia merkley who police have known for decades as simply jane doe. jodi, what did you find out? >> reporter: well, garvin, caitlyn johnson was just a baby when she was taken from her homeless and drug addicted mother here in santa rosa, and then adopted. now her mission has gone from trying to find her mother to trying to find out how she died. >> i wanted to meet her.

i wanted to -- even if it was a hug, that's all i wanted. i just wanted her to know there is someone there for her. >> reporter: 36-year-old caitlyn johnson has dreamed of reuniting with her biological mom for more than three decades. the two were torn apart in 1983 when her mother was arrested while trying to bathe her baby in a restaurant bathroom sink while high on drugs. >> and i just wanted to know what her name was and how old was she when she gave birth to me and what caused her to be homeless. >> reporter: through her own research, johnson figured out who her mom was, but didn't know what had become of her. until vacaville police recently identified cynthia belardi's body 28 years after finding her in an open field where the vacaville outlet mall was being built. >> to know that her body was found in '91 and it's 2019, they never gave up. >> reporter: vacaville police

exumaed belardi's body in 1992, making a clay sculpture and sketches. but she wasn't i.d.'d until now thanks to updated fingerprint technology. >> she's my mom. she's the one that gave me life. she struggled so much. >> reporter: johnson's grateful at least she's got some answers. but now she's determined to find out what happened to the mom she never got to thank, to hug, or to forgive. >> no matter how much time it takes, i will never give up. >> reporter: johnson says she has always loved her mother and always will. again, she's determined to find out what happened. reporting live in santa rosa, i'm jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, jodi. another twist in the golden state killer case, we are learning sacramento police arrested the suspected killer in the 1990s and then let him go. according to the sacramento bee,

joseph jaymes deangelo spent three hours in the sacramento county jail 23 years ago. he was suspected of holding up a gas station, but released. they had no way he was tied to the golden state killer investigation. they arrested him again outside i his home in sacramento after dna evidence connected him to a series of murders and rapes across california in the '70s and '80s. he is charged with 13 counts of murder and 13 counts of sex assault. >> now here is a story with an unusual twist. a piece of san francisco history stolen from a church in the lower pacific heights. on tuesday night, thieves stole a safe the size of a refrigerator from saint dominic's catholic church. the church believes the crooks were after cash, but inside were something more valuable, sacramento records dating back to the late 1800s. there were thousands of dollars in gift cards, but it was the religious records that were irreplaceable. police are still trying to

figure out how the bandits were able to haul away such a large safe. >> nothing like this has happened before. about two years ago we improved some of the security within the church and within the parish offices, consulting with members of our community that are part of the police force and armed forces and other security firms. >> ah, but there is a happy ending. someone returned the historic documents just a few hours ago. the church had offered a $10,000 reward, but it told our sister station telemundo that it only had to pay $500 to get them back. >> well, the famed flintstone house off 280 is in trouble with the town much hillsboro. recent months, the owner has decorated the burned orange arm with dinosaur statues and a yabadabadoo sign. the homeowner did the landscaping without permits. the home was built in 1976.

back then the home was painted a more discrete cream color. >> is there a more recognizable single-family home in all of the bay area? >> when i drive on 280, i love looking at it. >> now i wonder what the inside looks like. >> it's unique for sure. they had pictures when they put it on the market a few years ago. >> you drive by it thousands of times and you still always look for t. >> of course, yeah. and today we were able to see it clearly. >> beautiful day. >> with all of that sunshine. we are really enjoying a nice little break from all of the rain we've had across the bay area. and finally, a dry weekend headed our way. i love this view. this is a look in fremont. you can see the flags waving, nice little breeze. we made it to 70 degrees there. we'll be in the mid 60s going into the next hour and temperatures dropping off fast. if you're getting ready to head out to dinner, make sure you have a nice warm jacket to take with you. tomorrow we're back up into the upper 60s and low 70s once again. inland valleys reaching to 68 in

livermore. and in san jose, 73 degrees. we'll also see some low 70s in the north bay. looking good, santa rosa. 74 for the high on your saturday. and as you check out that seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, of course there will be some changes on the way. but we're going to enjoy the weekend and the sunshine while we have it. perfect weather for the saint patrick's day parade in dublin. festivities start about 9:30 in the morning. of course we know it goes on all weekend long, and tomorrow afternoon we're heading close to 70 degrees there. we also have the holy celebration going on in san francisco, and that will also be a comfortable event. lots of sunshine, nice breeze picking up. if you're planning to head out of town this weekend, yosemite will see those temperatures up to 47 degrees. just keep in mind because of some of the recent storm damage that some of those trails may still be closed. if you will be traveling this weekend, looks good. nice, quiet weather, but we do still have the storm out there in the pacific. this because of the high pressure that we're seeing over

the bay area right now will continue on to the pacific northwest up and around california. so we will not be affected by that one. there will be another storm developing right behind that. it's going to arrive as we go into the middle of next week. we can see the rain that will be moving in. but recent runs of the computer models start to weaken this system as it approaches. so we may not see as much rain as originally thought, but there is going to be another one right behind that. so that's something we'll be keeping tabs on as we into go into next week. inland areas are looking at an amazing weekend. highs in the low 70s. morning temperatures in the upper 40s, and then going into next week once again, we'll be watching that rain that may continue off and on into next weekend. the bottom line is to enjoy this weekend because next weekend may not look like this. >> ah. >> that's okay. we are going to enjoy. >> at least we know the rain is not completely gone. >> the temps have still very mild. like in the 60s and 70s with rain. that's fine. >> thanks.
